Are we regressing? How Generation Z proves to be failing to respond to life's stimuli. 📱

For the first time in history, the current generation is less intelligent than the previous one. 🧠

The Generation Z has shown a remarkable technological evolution among all generational groups. However, this progression has been accompanied by a regression in basic senses and simple behaviors. After a careful sociological analysis, it is evident that while technology has simplified many aspects of human life, it has also led to significant losses. The use of artificial intelligences, such as ChatGPT or Google Bard, to generate complete essays exemplifies this trend, resulting in reduced creativity and effort in various activities. This technological dependency is contributing to a growing trend towards apathy and lack of initiative.

Recently, I attended a seminar focused on high school education and encountered concerning results. Out of the five groups that presented, four of them showed symptoms of anxiety or panic attacks, affecting one to two out of the three members during the presentations. Although it is clear that the pandemic has played a significant role in this scenario, due to prolonged isolation, it is essential to recognize that this phenomenon reveals a dysfunctional regression in some aspects. For the first time in history, evidence emerges indicating a possible decrease in the Intelligence Quotient (IQ) among generations, contradicting the historical trend of gradual increase.

The increasing prevalence of anxiety disorders among members of Generation Z has been the subject of growing concern and research in the scientific community. Recent epidemiological studies indicate an alarming trend of increased incidence of these disorders in this age group. Multifaceted factors, including social, environmental, and technological pressures, are identified as significant contributors to this phenomenon. Constant access to information, combined with academic pressure, economic uncertainty, and frequent exposure to social media platforms, creates an environment conducive to the development and intensification of anxiety symptoms. Furthermore, the lack of effective coping skills and a strong support network among young Generation Z individuals can further exacerbate the severity of these disorders. A thorough understanding of these factors is crucial for the development of preventive and therapeutic interventions aimed at mitigating the negative impact of anxiety on the mental health and well-being of this population.

Michel Desmurget, research director at the French National Institute of Health, conclusively presents, with concrete data, how digital devices are seriously impairing the neural development of children and young people. Desmurget states: “IQ is measured by a standard test. However, it is not a ‘static’ test, being frequently revised. For example, my parents did not take the same test as me, but a group of people can be subjected to an older version of the test.”

The role played by technology in the lives of Generation Z is discussed in detail, highlighting the significant time spent on social media, as revealed by recent research. Studies, such as Morning Consult’s 2022 survey, highlight that over half of Generation Z members spend at least four hours daily on social media, with a considerable portion exceeding this time. This excessive immersion in digital platforms has profound implications on the cognitive, emotional, and social development of young people, contributing to the growing anxiety and apathy.

Furthermore, the rapid dissemination and adoption of digital technologies in everyday life are shaping the perceptions and behaviors of Generation Z in complex ways. Constant exposure to digital content, often without proper filtering or supervision, is impacting the formation of identity, values, and attitudes of this generation. The influence of social media on self-image, self-esteem, and interpersonal relationships is particularly concerning, as it can lead to an incessant quest for external validation and a disconnection from one’s own authentic feelings and experiences.
